Friday evening Bill Cecil spoke while a rainbow painted the sky

Overview

Overview:

The Biltmore Challenge XXVII happened! Third time was indeed the charm (cancelled two years prior thanks to Covid).

The ride DID overcome multiple obstacles. Perhaps most notable of them was we lost the use of the culvert on the main road for vehicle access to the ride site about a month prior to the ride. It was condemned except for horses, people and the occasional utility vehicle. Repairs required permits from the US Army Corps of Engineers and environmental impact studies -- likely mid-summer at the earliest. Biltmore Equestrian Center and the Biltmore Estate team swung into action. What had been an equine access / egress / sometime truck access into the ride site became much more level, and turns were widened and gravel laid down. Test. Repeat. Test again. Repeat. Test again -- success! -- so that all trailers were able to access the campground.

Helping make this start of the living-with-Covid-but-still-riding-era special at Biltmore, Bill Cecil, great-grandson of George Vanderbilt (who built the Estate) gave a warm, welcoming talk on Friday evening, briefly reminiscing about his own experiences with 100-mile competitions. Bill is the current CEO of Biltmore Estate. That gave a great background for the Estate's involvement with making the ride successful. Bill's talk was counterpointed with a huge gusting of wind and a brief, intense rain shower, which gave us the beautiful rainbow above.

Thanks to Biltmore Estate, Biltmore Equestrian Center, trailmaster Stagg Newman, and our team of pre-riding volunteers, trails were practically free from briars, well-marked, de-treed where trees had fallen over the winter months, repaired from winter storms, re-routed as needed to avoid new farm fencing, and other routine maintenance.

Over the two days, 207 riders took to the trails.

Of special note, one rider completed the combination of 50 and 100 miles on Friday and Saturday:
Mia Moore, an 11-year-old junior who wore out her sponsors both days, finishing smiling and enthusiastic (and, incidentally, winning the 100 {her first!} on Saturday)! In recognition of that special accomplishment, Mia received $150 in gift certificates from Distance Depot and The Endurance Boutique at the Sunday morning awards ceremony.

A selection of follow-ups:

1.  A few horses were treated at the ride site and recovered well before ride end.

2. Results have been submitted to AERC  and AHA.

3.  Refunds if applicable:

Please look for any general refund around the end of May.  The process:  post-ride Cheryl assembles the data for refunds (two days of work). These were sent to BEC on Wednesday night, 11 May.  BEC checks them over for bloopers (which have been known to happen).  After checking it goes to Biltmore Estate accounting for further checking then check issuance, then Post Office.  If you are getting a snail mail refund, please bug Cheryl if you don't have it by end of May.

4.  Thanks for your understanding about parking. Always a challenge! and special thanks to Ginee Ritter for coordinating that.

Other special recognitions (I may miss many):

The volunteer coordinators for this ride are the best: Bonni Hannah (for the 'away' positions: spotters, pre-riders); Sharyn Groh (for the camp positions: timer helpers, scribes, runners....); special thanks also to assistant Anne Robinson.

Food organization: Rachel Kelly and Carly Klose (BEC) (unless you have managed a ride, you have no idea what a headache food is, even if you confine it to our 70+ officials and volunteers each day).

Our sponsors, contributors, vets, timers, officials, farrier (Jeff Pauley), Joe Schoech (simply the best new rider briefing around), volunteers....

The riders, the horses, and their crews!!!!

THANKS!

Saturday 50-Mile Team Results:

For the teams, the times of the fastest three riders out of three or four count.  While the primary sponsor of the team awards was Boys Arnold Wealth Management, the Newmans rounded things out with recognition pin-on buttons.

Some of the unstated competition is among teams for the best names. For the Saturday 50 mile ride, names were Trail Terrors, The Rownkers, Team ABC, Team AA, M's, Khorvet and the Misfits, Finishers, Biltmore Forever and 3 Bombs and a Tom. So nine teams were formed. And, amazingly, ALL nine finished the requisite three riders.

At the ride, team awards were messed up. Two things happened: (1) the wrong riders were associated with Three Bombs and a Tom; then (2) riders were shifting distances.... and starting times... and the spread sheet did not get fully cleaned up until a day later. The corrected report follows. Winning team was Three Bombs and a Tom, Tom Hagis, Isabella Bertolina, Tina Murphy and Nancy Sluys riding, with best three posting 20:11:57. They won flexible buckets and pin-on buttons. Second place team was Biltmore Forever, Marbie Kollath, Clarke Martin, Mike Bostic, and Bonni Hannah posting 21:28:34, winning flexible buckets and pin-on buttons. Third place team was the Finishers comprised of Sarah Hunt, Cheryl van Deusen, Melissa Ribley and Robert Ribley. They should have won lead lines (that actually went to the next team, the Rownkers by mistake).

Correct Saturday 50-mile team results are here.

Saturday AERC 75-Mile Results:

Eight (8) riders started the 75-mile ride, with four (4) finishing for a 50% completion rate. The winner finished around 10:07 pm. Obviously, the trail rode 'tough'. Completion awards were Biltmore 2022 T-shirts with the full color ride logo sponsored by Biltmore Equestrian Center and New Holland / West Hills Tractor.

Brooks Prater won the 75-mile ride on Silver Lined

Rachel Land's Matla (HF Hot Chocolate) won Best Conditioned  and High Vet Score in the 75-mile ride

Brooks Prater won on her horse, Silver Lined (Tango), in a ride time of 12:37:21. Roughly 20 minutes later, the other three finishers came in. Lisa Delp on WMA Sandpainting (Preacher) and Melina Efthimiadis on Out Ragehess (Trajan) tied for second in a ride time of 12:55:52. And Rachel Land on Matla (HF Hot Chocolate) came in a minute later, with an official ride time of 12:56:55. For first, Brooks won a lovely hand drawn and fired platter with the ride logo done by Marbie Kollath; and $75 in gift certificates to The Endurance Boutique. Lisa and Melina split the gift certificates for second and third: for Platinum Performance and the other for $40 donated by Parry Harness and Tack / Running Bear. Rachel got the turtle award -- a coffee table quality book on the Biltmore Estate. All received the top-ten bottles of Biltmore wine donated by Biltmore Equestrian Center.

Middle of the Pack went to Melina Efthimiadis by agreement with Lisa Delp. She won a one-year Equestrian Pass to the Biltmore Estate, entitling the winner to access to the grounds, house, and trails of the Estate for a year; donated by Biltmore Equestrian Center.

All the finishers stood for Best Conditioned, which was won by Matla, ridden by Rachel Land (score 770.4). That pair also got High Vet Score (score 490!). For Best Conditioned, they won a $50 gift certificate donated by Distance Depot and an engraved Riverwood Craft hand-hammered pewter dogwood-incised plate reminiscent of those given at the Western North Carolina Three-Day Hundred years ago put on by Mimi Cecil (Bill's mother). High vet score earned an embroidered rump rug sporting an oh-so-appropriate makeover from its original 2020 to become a 2022 prize.

Since the eleventh through twentieth category had no one, all finishers got multiple bags of Rounders horse cookies donated by Blue Seal. Their horses approved.

No juniors started the 75-mile ride.

Sticking With It finished the required three of four riders, Brooks Prater, Lisa Delp, Melina Efthimiadis, and Cristel Bayol-Wyatt, posting a combined time of 38:29:05. Saturday AERC 100-Mile Results:

The 100-mile ride started eight (8) riders, of whom four (4) finished for a 50% completion rate (yes, similar to the 75). In what must be a late-winner record, the winner finished at 3:46 am.

Also a record, the winner was a Junior: Mia Moore, an eleven year old who had done 50 miles on Friday. In the 100, Mia rode Heather Wilkerson's Perzzia (ride time of 18:16). Mia started off sponsored by Sarah Arthur, who was mounted on another Heather Wilkerson horse, Nevada. Unfortunately, Nevada came up lame after the second loop. Then Heather took over sponsorship --- but then Heather's horse was pulled after the third loop. The crew checked -- none of the other riders chose to sponsor Mia through the remaining loops. But Sarah was game to ride, so a horse was found for her for the fourth loop. Meanwhile the crew scouted camp, and found another horse for Sarah for the last 2 loops (needing to go just shy of 30 miles). The endurance community can make miracles happen. Mia kept her focus on her horse, the trail and her ride.  In the last loop, Robin Schadt, in order to ensure that she herself would finish, slowed down. So Mia and Sarah, keeping their pace, passed Robin (as later did Alayna Hay and Jane Rodrigue). Mia crossed the finish line at a gallop, just over a minute ahead of Alayna and Jane, who tied for second. Robin finished about an hour later. It was the small hours, but a hugely happy bunch at the finish!

The core team, Heather Wilkerson, Mia Moore, and Sarah Arthur

Alayna Hay on her Ivan Groznyi (Ivan) tied for second in a ride time of 18:17:20. Alayna took home the Middle of the Pack award.

Jane Rodrigue on her Al Shama Shaazon (Albert) tied for second in a ride time of 18:17:20. Jane also won Best Conditioned.

Robin Schadt came in back of the pack, but triumphant, on RAL Sorceress (Chloe) in a ride time of 19:14:00.

For first, Mia received a lovely hand drawn and fired platter done by Marbie Kollath with the ride logo; and a gift certificates from The Endurance Boutique for a pair of Sergio Grasso riding shoes.

Alayna and Jane split the gift certificates for second and third: for Platinum Performance and the other for $40 donated by Parry Harness and Tack / Running Bear.

Middle of the Pack went to Alayna Hay by agreement with Jane Rodrigue. She won a one-year Equestrian Pass to the Biltmore Estate, entitling the winner to access to the grounds, house, and trails of the Estate for a year; donated by Biltmore Equestrian Center.

Robin got the back of the pack award -- a coffee table quality book on the Biltmore Estate.

All received the top-ten bottles of Biltmore wine donated by Biltmore Equestrian Center, and lots of bags of Rounders horse cookies donated by Blue Seal.

All riders stood their horses for Best Conditioned judging. Perzzia with Mia Moore up got high vet score (488). Mia, at 93 pounds, is seriously disadvantaged when it comes to getting Best Conditioned ..... which went to Jane Rodrigue (BC score of 769.7). For Best Conditioned, Jane won a $100 gift certificate donated by Distance Depot and an engraved Riverwood Craft hand-hammered pewter dogwood-incised plate reminiscent of those given at the Western North Carolina Three-Day Hundred years ago put on by Mimi Cecil (Bill's mother). Mia's Perzzia's high vet score earned an embroidered rump rug sporting an oh-so-appropriate makeover from its original 2020 to become a 2022 prize.

As first Junior, Mia also got a keepsake box with her on-trail portrait on the lid donated by Becky Pearman.

Saturday AHA Region XII 100-Mile Championship Results:

The Biltmore Challenge hosted the Arabian Horse Association (AHA) Region XII 100-Mile Championship for 2022. A total of 5 horse / riders out of the 8 starters entered the AHA event: four full Arabs, and one HalfArab. Entry requirements included that, the rider and owner must be 2022 ‘Competition’ members of AHA and the horse must be AHA registered. Furthermore, as a Regional Championship ride, the horse must have a minimum of 100 lifetime miles of which 50 miles may be from an AHA Regional or National Competitive Trail Ride, but any other miles must be Endurance miles (not Limited Distance).

Heather Wilkerson was active in ensuring her horse Perzzia had correct ownership transfer recorded in AHA, and in getting Mia Moore AHA Competition membership for 2022, so Mia actually won the AHA Region XII Arab Championship for 2022, getting the Arabian Championship garland and ribbon. Jane Rodrigue's Al Shama Shaazon got Best Conditioned Arab, getting a lovely teal with Indian-pattern overlay headstall and reins donated by Taylored Tack.

Only one HalfArab entered and did not complete.

Saturday 100-Mile Team Results:

For the teams, the times of the fastest three riders out of three or four count.  While the primary sponsor of the team awards was Boys Arnold Wealth Management, the Newmans rounded things out, including recognition pin-on buttons. Two teams were named, with none completing the requisite three out of four riders. Therefore! Given the overall ride team spirit exhibited to get Mia Moore sponsored and mounted throughout her ride, and the overall support for her winning performance, management chose to award the four finishers as the first place team in the AERC spirit. They each won a large flexible tub donated by Boys Arnold and the pin-on buttons.

Eastern Crabbett Arabian Horse Society (ECAHS) Awards for 2022:

The Eastern Crabbet Arabian Horse Society sponsored a "Best Crabbet" horse award in each distance. ECAHS offered both Young Rider / Junior (YJ) and Senior divisions for this award. The horse must have been Crabbet-certified as having at least 25% Crabbet blood by around May 1 (or shortly thereafter). For those owning Arabians and HalfArabians, this can provide some insight into the somewhat-arcane aspects of our horses' breeding. The awards are strikingly beautiful black/gray/gold neck ribbons.

We are getting a cadre of horses whose owners have qualified them. The "Best Crabbett" results for each distance are as follows:

Friday 30-mile ride (5 SR riders started, and 1 YJ rider):
