Overview

Overview:

The fall colors were at their height around Asheville to provide a great backdrop to the Biltmore Equestrian Center's Fall Ride to Benefit Hope for Horses. And riders came out to enjoy the colors and the trails.

As usual prior to an event, all eyes are on the weather. And the forecasts were varying daily (sometimes hourly) from between less than a tenth of an inch of rain on ride day to two inches of rain on ride day. So, riders came prepared, and rode safely.

The vet team of Ann Stuart, Duane Barnett, Vicky Bochynek,Otis Schmitt, and Adam Crowther (treatment) provided encouragement and support at every stop. The volunteers (recorders, timers, spotters, Dr Bob Marshall, general go-fers, and BEC and Estate workers) similarly conveyed positive karma.

Somewhat predictably, the trails in places got 'slicker than snot', but the riders did a spectacular job -- over 80% completion rate in both rides. So Kudos! Juniors did particularly well, with 8 of 8 completing in the 50, and 6 of 7 completing in the 25. Over 100 riders took to the trails over the two distances.

No horses were treated.

Thanks to everyone who came! We enjoyed your being here, and hope it was mutual.

AERC 25-Mile Ride Results

Sixty-two horses started the 25-mile open ride, and fifty riders finished for a 80.5% completion rate. Completion awards were wood-backed soft grooming brushes with logos for Biltmore and Hope for Horses burned into the backs.

Michael Carraway of Mississippi won the 25-mile ride on his Saban AA, in a ride time of 2:47:30. Three minutes later, Jerie Friday's Akamir pulsed down to take second. Third horse to pulse was Rocket's Foxy Roxy, a bit over a minute later.

Top ten awards were bottles of Biltmore Estate wine.

Best condition was won by Jerie Friday and Akamir. High Vet Score was Becky Bunnell's BR Jubaleigh.

Six juniors started the ride with five finishing. First junior was Joseph Dimsdale, sponsored by Johnny Petras, on Johnny's Comets Royal Flush, in a ride time of 4:00:35.

Crystal Lindaberry got turtle in 5:12:10 on her Sonitas Peppy Lena.

AERC 50-Mile Results

Forty-three horses started the 50-mile open ride, and thirty-eight completed for an 88.4% completion rate (outstanding considering the conditions!). Completion awards were wood-backed soft grooming brushes with logos for Biltmore and Hope for Horses burned into the backs.

An exciting three-way run-off for the win was marred when a saddle slipped and a rider came off, nearly run over by another's horse. Fortunately damage appeared minimal. The winner was Edward Gurley on his Derbraso Haze in a ride time of 6:02:01; second was Theresa Carroll on her Skyfall Micah, in 6:02:02; third was Marek Lipold on his  GL Trail Reader in 6:02:03.

Top ten awards were bottles of Biltmore Estate wine.

Best condition and high vet score were both won by Betsey Knight's Rain E Nite.

Eight (!) juniors started the ride and all (!!!) completed. Lily Douglas was first junior sponsored by Claude Brewer on JD Fountain's King TIki in a ride time of 6:08.
